Somehow the fantastic Be My Eyes had passed me by before today – but on stumbling upon it, I immediately signed up.
The premise is simple – register as a ‘seeing’ volunteer, and be on a waitlist to receive an in-app call from a person with sight issues. They’ll ask you a simple question about what’s in front of them, via their device camera. It might be a sell-by date on milk, or what colour an item of clothing is, for example.
That’s it. Simple, but incredibly effective and beneficial for those who need it. And, thankfully, without monetisation. Exactly what the Internet was invented for.
As somebody who’s virtually always immediately responsive to a notification – I wear an Apple Watch all day, and are usually within inches of an iPhone or Mac – it makes perfect sense. Looking forward to receiving my first call.
