I love iA Writer – it’s how I write, or at least construct, most of the posts on this site. What is it that separates it from the competition? Honestly, just the simplicity.
For many years it’s been the perfect text editor – doing the bear minimum without any fuss or anything superfluous, unless you choose to utilise it. It’s the digital equivalent of a crisp, blank piece of paper, and a quality, but carefully selected, stationery toolkit alongside it.
Striking that balance in an app isn’t easy, and, as is often case, requires a great deal of design thinking to make it seem so effortless.
It’s no surprise then to read how much thought went into redeveloping the app’s icon; a really informative piece that explains their decision-making and design process in great detail.
As for the new icon itself? Of course, it’s the most simple solution – for all the right reasons.
